No trip to LA is complete without a trip to Gjelina, it’s a Venice classic. You have to book early though, it’s one of those places where I never seem to get a table before 9 pm.
I like to start off with a pre-dinner drink on the rooftop of Hotel Erwin: it’s the perfect Venice showcase.
then it’s a 5 min walk up to Gjelina. We were going vego with Anshul but that does mean a little meat dish on the side for Al 😉
Gjelina is good for sharing – my favorite way to eat, because you get to try heaps. I love that so many restaurants in LA are designed to share.
The 1 thing that went wrong: they brought all the meat dishes 1st. Kind of annoying when you’ve made it clear you have a vegetarian with you.
Now the lighting is super dark in Gjelina so I’m afraid these are not the best pics. Anyway, we had:
Wild boar & duck terrine: I’m not a fan of terrine or pate but Al loves it. I tasted it, flavour-wise it was good, I just can’t handle the texture.
Grilled squid: yum! I love tentacles. These were done with chicory, Kumquat with a salsa verde. Really good.
Hand cut frites with harissa ketchup– because you just can’t go past good frites!
Thumbalina carrots with coriander & tahini. These were good, carrots on the menu is awesome.
Sunchokes with harissa sauce. These things are my favourite right now. Crispy outside with a fluffy inside. I can’t get enough.
You can’t go past a pizza at Gjelina. They are so, so good. I honestly can’t remember what one we got, but I’ve never had a bad one.
There are plenty of good food places in Venice, but Gjelina is one not to miss
