Breakfast with the pup: Rose Cafe, Venice LA

Rose Cafe! The first time I stayed in Venice we all went for brunch at the Rose Cafe and sat out on the front patio. We looked around and everyone had their dogs with them. We made a joke about embarrassing ourselves being in the neighbourhood without a pet with us πŸ˜‚ that when I created my amazing business idea, dogs for hire πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚ it’s perfect! When you’re visiting you can hire a dog for the day to take hiking and to brunch! Weirdly Al was not on board with the idea (I just needed 20 starter dogs), but Jax was very supportive.

Fast forward to 3 years later, and we are finally branching back at the Rose, and this time we had our dog (not for hire). The Rose does a good breakfast. I’ve been annoyed before when I’ve gone for drinks and ordered the cheese plate (shall & over priced), but I think maybe America just isn’t a good place for cheese plates. Breakfast though, they do well.

I could not go past ‘the best biscuits ever’. You know I have staked that claim on City State Diner in Portland, so I was very interested to see how they stacked up. They are good guys, very good. Maybe the best in LA. A super crispy outside – that’s how I think they should be, don’t argue- and a soft, fluffy inside. Served with some yummy raspberry jam.

Al orders the short rib hash, no surprises there. It was really tasty, and HUGE. So huge he only ate half! I know! Unheard of!

I got the heuvos rancheros. These were really good. 2 crisp tortillas with some lovely beans between them, topped with egg & avocado. It was a pretty perfect size. I did however, panic order some bacon. It did not need it. Plus it was super thick cut bacon, which just isn’t for me. So, it ended up going with Al’s dish.

I like the Rose for puppy dining. The staff are really cool about it, even when your puppy puts his nose up your hostesses skirt (don’t worry, we have now had a conversation about consent). Plus there’s plenty of space, and the food is yummy. I’d say, this is one of the best Venice spots for a puppy breakfast. Plus then it’s just a 15 min drive to the dog park for fun.
